Tablet, laptop or both?

Nowadays we love gadgets. The more the better, it seems - smartphones, tablets, laptops, ereaders. But do we really need them all? Consider the laptop and tablet, for instance. Obviously there are significant similarities between them. They're both "computers" in a way. They're often used for similar purposes. And they're both supposed to be mobile devices. But which one should you choose? Can it really be that you should choose both?

Last year Forbes republished an interesting article which attempted to answer the question whether your tablet can replace your laptop. The author described how he would carry not just a tablet, but also a smartphone and laptop as well. He wondered whether there might be one gadget that could somehow incorporate them all. For him, it was slightly unnatural to use the tablet to type out lengthy emails. He preferred to wait until he had access to a "proper" computer. And for that reason, he believed that the tablet would never replace the laptop (i.e. it couldn't give him the same typing experience that a laptop could).

This is a decent point. However, there are some tablets out there that have a keyboard option. These models almost defy categorization. They occupy a sort of middle ground between tablet and laptop. And perhaps these are the sorts of device that can replace the laptop?
